Highway 9's closed night ends at a red light

California Highway 9 north of Boulder Creek has two different instructions for the same bridge next week. Caltrans says the road will close at Kings Creek Bridge from Pool Drive to Primavera Road and Old County Highway from 8 p.m. Monday, August 24, until 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 25. During that ten-hour window, crews plan to set 100-foot precast concrete girders for the southbound portion of the replacement bridge.

The full closure is the hard stop. Caltrans says a detour will be available by way of Highway 17 and that message and directional signs will warn travelers before the work zone. The agency does not give a universal detour time, so the effect on an individual trip depends on its origin, destination and live traffic. Any added time beyond the announced closure window is an editorial inference, not a Caltrans forecast.

At 6 a.m. Tuesday, the road is scheduled to reopen, but the construction condition does not disappear with the barricades. Temporary signals will return to 24-hour one-way control at the bridge. That means opposing traffic will keep sharing one available lane in turns, a pattern that can feel open at one moment and stopped at the next.

The girder lift is also followed by a second clock. Caltrans expects crews to work around the clock at Kings Creek Bridge until the deck is poured, with that phase expected to be complete by Saturday, August 29. The lift itself had originally been scheduled for late July, which is a useful reminder that a construction date belongs in a predeparture check rather than a saved note from weeks earlier.

Kings Creek is one half of a larger replacement project along this rural mountain corridor. Caltrans is also replacing the San Lorenzo River Bridge closer to Boulder Creek. The project page says inspections found structural deficiencies and nonstandard features at both bridges, and the replacements are intended to keep Highway 9 serviceable while providing standard 12-foot lanes and 8-foot outside shoulders.

The physical change is substantial even though the crossing stays on the existing alignment. Caltrans lists the new Kings Creek Bridge at 99 feet long and 40 feet wide, replacing an 88-foot-long, 28-foot-wide structure. The new San Lorenzo River Bridge is planned at the same 106-foot length as the existing crossing but 40 feet wide instead of 31. Construction on the two-bridge project is scheduled to continue into March 2028.

For residents, visitors, service crews and deliveries using the San Lorenzo Valley, the useful route note has three lines: Highway 9 is fully closed for the girder lift Monday night, Highway 17 is the announced detour, and one-way signal control resumes Tuesday morning. A bridge project often asks travelers to remember more than one version of open. On Highway 9, the overnight closure makes the lift possible; the red-and-green signal cycle then makes room for the longer rebuild. Planning for both conditions is what turns a construction update into a usable trip decision.
