Truck navigation starts with dimensions, not destination
A route cannot protect a commercial vehicle if the system does not know the vehicle. Even then, signs, permits, and current restrictions remain in charge.

FMCSA's guidance on GPS use begins with a basic distinction: commercial drivers should use navigation designed for trucks and buses. A passenger-car route may ignore low clearances, axle or gross-weight limits, prohibited roads, and turns that a combination vehicle cannot make.
Truck-specific software is only as good as the vehicle profile entered into it. Height, weight, length, axle information, trailer type, and hazardous-material restrictions can change the suitable route. A saved profile from a different tractor or trailer is not close enough.
The destination also needs verification. A correct street address can point to an employee entrance, passenger parking lot, or side of a divided road that does not serve trucks. Shipping and receiving directions should be compared with the mapped final approach.
FMCSA also says road signs and advisories override the navigation recommendation. A low-clearance sign, detour, variable message board, weight posting, or officer's direction describes the road the driver is actually on, even when the screen disagrees.
Map freshness matters because infrastructure and restrictions change. A truck device that does not update automatically needs a deliberate update process. The fleet should know who owns that task and how completion is checked.

Even a current database can be incomplete. FMCSA's low-clearance technology research notes that some overpasses have not been documented in navigation databases. That is why a route review needs more than confidence in the device.
The safest time to resolve a questionable route is while parked. Drivers should not enter addresses, change vehicle data, or hunt for alternatives while moving. Dispatch can support by sending verified stop details and a safe call point before the complex segment.
Permitted and oversize movements need their permit route, not an ordinary fastest route. The permit may specify roads, times, escorts, or conditions that the navigation system cannot infer.
When a driver encounters a restriction that was not in the plan, the priority is to stop somewhere safe before attempting a correction. A last-second turn into an unknown street can create a second problem while trying to avoid the first.

Afterward, capture the restriction and source. A customer note, route library, or geofence warning can prevent the next driver from discovering the same issue at the same bridge.
The fleet should periodically test common routes with the exact vehicle profiles it operates. A route that works for a day cab and 48-foot trailer may not work for a sleeper and 53-foot trailer, even when the pickup and delivery are identical.
Good navigation is a layered decision: correct equipment data, verified customer approach, current commercial map, official restrictions, and a driver empowered to obey the road in front of the windshield.
